2004 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The f-150 is the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. With nearly 900,000 annual sales, the f-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (car or truck) in america for 21 consecutive years.  now, they've thrown away the old formula and created a brand new f-150 from the ground up.  ford admits the new f-150 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive to build than the wildly successful previous version. It is also the best-handling, quietest, most car-like full-size pickup truck in the history of the world. All of the new f-150 models feature all-new interiors that show attention to detail. The seats vary, but all are comfortable and supportive. Each boasts its own interior style and features engines, suspensions and cab configurations designed to meet specific needs. It features an all-new work-truck interior and comes with all the basics such as 40/20/40 bench seats in vinyl or cloth, an all-plastic dashboard, a black grille and 17-inch steel wheels. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab styles. An f-150 xl regular cab 2wd automatic retails for $21,215, while a long-wheelbase (145-inch) 4x4 is priced at $24,855.  stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. An stx starts at $22,215. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices do not include the destination charge of $795.)  xlt is ford's volume model and comes with its own egg crate grille style. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercrew and supercab versions offer power rear windows. The xlt comes with the new overhead rail console system and fog lamps when ordered as a 4x4. Xlt supercab 4x4 4. 6-liter v8 automatic retails for $30,085 msrp.  fx4 is a specialty 4x4 off-road model. Fx4 comes only in a stepside version with special chrome interior trim and markings, and a floor console with floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab and supercrew body styles with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 300-horsepower 5. 4-liter 3-valve-per-cylinder v8, which ford says has the best fuel consumption of any v8 engine it has ever built. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather and the audiophile system are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercab 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $32,185.  lariat is the luxury model and, for the time being, sits at the top of the line. Lariat has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. It amplifies the all-new interior with black-on-cream instrumentation, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. The nearest competitor has only 12 variations, a fact that ford hopes will bring more people into its dealerships. In addition to the 26 variants of the f-150 within the five model ranges, there are dozens of options,. walkaroundall ford f-150s now have the front window style popularized on the f-250 and f-350 super duty pickups: a sharp cut in the forward part of the door sheet metal that drops away to allow much clearer viewing of the large rearview mirrors on both sides.  the whole nose is shaped more squarely, the grilles are larger and bolder, the bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is more sculpted, and every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. It's the seven-crossmember skeleton onto which everything else bolts, and accounts for quite a bit of the nearly 675 pounds more weight of the new f-150 compared to the old truck. The frame is nine times more resistant to twisting and 50 percent more resistant to bending than the old c-shaped frame.  the front suspension is a completely new double-wishbone style for both 2wd and 4wd versions. The rear suspension now has outboard, rather than inboard, shock absorbers to control the rear end of the truck better in quick maneuvers, along with wider, heavier three-inch leaf springs.  the steering has been changed to a heavy-duty power-assisted rack-and-pinion system. The ford truck folks committed only one unpardonable by us: the clear plastic over the instrument pod is way, way too reflective and makes most of the instruments difficult to see in bright sunlight. Ford says that, between these two things, the 5. 4-liter engine, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, is also the fuel-stingiest engine the company has ever tested. 2007 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New shelby model adds supercharged muscle. introductionthe mustang remains one of the most widely recognized, respected, and desired nameplates in the automobile business. The ford mustang defined the pony-car segment in 1964; plymouth's barracuda may have beaten ford to the showroom by 16 days, but it was the mustang that set the sales records. The 'cuda is gone now, and so are the camaro, firebird, cougar, javelin, challenger, and every other would-be rival, leaving ford's pony to prance alone. At least for now.  for 2007, the 210-hp mustang v6 and 300-hp mustang gt are joined by the new 500-hp supercharged shelby gt500, offering its own look, tuning, and equipment.  available in fastback coupe or convertible body styles, the mustang v6 models make nice, stylish cruisers. The gt is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The shelby gt500 adds to the fun with its near-corvette performance. It's quite tossable, making for good sport on gymkhanas, race tracks or back roads. It delivers the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades, but it's smoother and quieter and better built than older models.  its interior looks like a throwback from the '60s, but it's functional and well finished. Granted, interior space is limited, especially given its exterior dimensions; and the back seat might better be described as a package shelf.  the ford mustang is an american success story. It holds true to an idea that still appeals to people of all ages, decades after the original was launched. Forty-three years after it created an automotive niche all its own, mustang is both true to its roots and better than ever. lineupthe mustang comes in two body styles: coupe and convertible. Each is available with a v6 or a v8. A five-speed manual transmission is standard; a five-speed automatic optional 995). Its 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 produces 300 horsepower.  the gt premium coupe 26,455) adds a 500-watt cd changer and aberdeen leather-trimmed sport seats.  the gt convertible 30,100) and gt premium convertible 31,280), are equipped similarly to the coupe versions.  the shelby gt500 comes as a coupe 40,930) or convertible 45,755). The gt500 is powered by a 5. 4-liter supercharged v8 developing 500 horsepower. It incurs a gas-guzzler tax 1300).  the pony package 750) for v6 models adds a firmer suspension, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, a custom grille with fog lamps, and other visual upgrades, giving these more economical mustangs something closer to the look and handling of a gt.  a new california special package 1895) spiffs up a premium gt with 18-inch wheels, side scoops, unique tape stripes, rolled bright exhaust tips, black leather trimmed seats with unique 'cal special' contrasting dove or parchment inserts, a larger air intake, a deeper chin spoiler, and unique front and rear fascias. The name refers to a special limited edition offered to california ford dealers in 1968, but this cal special will be available nationwide. The gt appearance package 245) features rolled exhaust tips, an engine cover with a pony emblem, and a hood scoop.  options include a new comfort group 575) that includes an electrochromic mirror with compass, heated front seats, and six-way power for the front passenger seat. Stand-alone options include an active anti-theft system 328); 1000-watt audio 1,295); an interior upgrade package with leather-wrapped steering wheel, satin aluminum trim, and other cool-looking goodies 460); power-adjustable driver's seat for the deluxe coupe 365); heated front seats 250); and 18-inch wheels 825). Sirius satellite radio 195) joins the option list for '07, and dvd-based navigation will be available on later 2007 models.  safety features on all mustangs include dual-stage front-impact airbags and three-point belts for all seats. Antilock brakes and traction control are standard on gts and optional on v6 models. Front passenger side-impact airbags 380) are optional on all models, so be sure to order them as they are designed to offer torso protection in a side impact. walkaroundnothing says modern american sporty car better than this latest mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of pony-car heritage. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967-70 models.  yet the mustang follows modern trends by offering ever-larger wheels, including two distinct 18-inch wheel designs for the gt. The modern mustang is based on the same mechanical platform as the jaguar s-type, albeit with some cost-trimming measures such as its live-axle rear suspension.  relative to previous mustangs, everything under the car has been substantially upgraded. The brakes are bigger by nearly 20 percent. A completely new front and rear suspension yields a much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering. New engines deliver performance with efficiency. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any a fighting chance in bad situations.  all mustang engines are secured to the body with hydraulic mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota.  like its muscle-era namesake, the shelby gt500 stands out with a unique front grille and bumper fascia, providing both a functionally larger and unimpeded air intake, while reducing air flow under the body. A unique engine hood with dual air-extraction slits is domed to clear the larger, 5. 4-liter engine. Carroll shelby's signature striking-cobra emblem glowers from the gas cap and from a characteristically off-center position in the grille. The whole package rides on unique 18-inch rims sporting ford's svt (special vehicle team) logo. Just as in 1968, coupes are topped by le mans-style racing stripes. They look terrific, though we're not sure they should carry down onto the rear bumper where they compete with the rear license plate.  shelby convertibles feature a premium fabric for the top. interiorthe mustang interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function.  there's a heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with the dash divided into distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse-and-tricolor-bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days (just like the old days). Another interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts instead of chrome, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness.  these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. 2007 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A family favorite with a strong record for safety. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, it competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition.  with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,520 pounds of payload.  explorer earned the best possible impact protection rating in the government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact. (this was in the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model-year new car assessment program.) ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010.  for 2007, ford has simplified the model lineup. The safety canopy side air-curtain system is now standard on eddie bauer and limited. An auxiliary audio input jack is now standard, and power-retracting running boards and heated windshield wipers are available. And the available rear-seat dvd entertainment center comes with a larger, eight-inch screen.  the most important change for 2007 might be the new interior door handles, of all things. We found the door pulls on the 2006 models awkward, traceable to thick armrests engineered for crash protection. This situation has been improved for 2007.  though car-based suvs, or crossovers, such as the ford edge are gaining in popularity for their smoother ride, better handling, and easier interior access, the explorer remains a good choice for families that tow. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers. lineupthe 2007 ford explorer lineup comprises the xlt 2wd 25,300), xlt 4wd 27,595), eddie bauer 2wd 28,300), eddie bauer 4wd 30,595), limited 2wd 31,400), and limited 4wd 33,659). Xlt options include leather seating surfaces with heated front seats 995), heated windshield 300), and navigation 2,505). A power-folding third row is optional on all models. The third-row seat comes standard on the limited, but can be deleted for credit (-$375), providing a flatter cargo floor.  other options include a power glass sunroof 850); rear-seat dvd entertainment 1,295); power adjustable pedals 150); rear heat and air conditioning 675), sirius satellite radio 195); and power-retractable running boards 695).  safety features include the same roll stability control system already used by volvo and land rover. It intervenes with throttle and brakes when the computer senses an impending tip over. Other safety features standard on all explorers are seat-mounted side-impact air bags, adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, and passenger classifier in the front passenger seat. Safety canopy air bags, standard on limited and bauer, are optional 560) on xlt. walkaroundup front, ford explorer looks like an f-150 pickup with finer, scaled-down features. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way.  between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside.  each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. There are dark wood accents in most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield.  the seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than in older explorers, where we found them a bit hard. The colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than in an '05 or earlier explorer, so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 in older models). The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded.  the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display.  the interior door handles are awkward to use, though this improves with familiarity. driving impressiontwo engines are available for the ford explorer. Both powertrains are smooth and quiet. With the lighter v6, the explorer is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both engines are pleasant and competent. It meets federal tier ii, bin 4 emissions requirements for ultra low emissions vehicle ii (ulev ii) status. It develops 292 horsepower, and 300 pound-feet of torque. The v8 delivers low emissions as well, meeting the tier ii, bin 5 federal standard, which is compliant with california's low emissions vehicle ii (lev ii) standard. The suspension is relatively supple, giving the explorer a nice ride on rough streets. Yet the explorer does not lean excess. 2004 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth, agile, roomy, practical, and affordable. introductionford escape is a good choice among small, affordable, road-going suvs. It also provides brisk acceleration when equipped with the optional v6 engine. It's compact but practical. Folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. Best of all, its price is relatively low.  first introduced as a 2001 model, the escape benefited from upgraded interior materials for 2003, and is unchanged for 2004. There are, however, a couple of new packages aimed at enhancing value. lineupford escape comes in three trim levels, xls, xlt, and limited. It comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission. The xls 4wd model 21,925) comes standard with the v6 and automatic.  xlt 22,555) and xlt 4wd 24,180) come standard with the v6 and automatic transmission. Limited sports a monochrome exterior with body-colored trim and bright machined 16-inch aluminum wheels.  option packages are available for each trim level. Xlt premium package 1230) includes leather seating surfaces, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 60/40 split rear bench seat, front door map pockets, an overhead console with dual storage bins, a front passenger under-seat storage tray, and a power moonroof with sunshade. New for 2004 is the limited luxury comfort package, which includes the mach audio system, heated side-view mirrors, reverse sensing system, front and rear premium leather-trimmed seats and heated front seats. Also new for 2004 is the base limited model, which features a monochromatic exterior appearance and front and rear leather seats, in addition to an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual sunvisors with illuminated mirrors and an in-dash am/fm six-disc audio system. walkaroundthe escape is wider than other compact suvs, giving it a well-planted demeanor. Escape's forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding, and integrated bumper guard lend a functional appearance, while its short front and rear overhangs add to its sporting appeal. It has a family resemblance to the ford explorer and expedition, and looks bolder and more aggressive than the honda cr-v.  being able to see the leading edge of the hood from the driver's seat makes the escape easier to maneuver in tight places. Its 7. 8 inches of ground clearance may help clear some obstacles. Outside door handles are easy to grab and feel like they're going to last.  accessories from ford outfitters include a snap-in pet barrier and a system to haul two mountain bikes in the cargo area. Bike racks can also be mounted on the roof; the standard roof rack with crossbars holds up to 100 pounds. We don't like the idea of compromising an suv's ground clearance with running boards, but ford claims that the running boards on the escape do not reduce ground clearance. They are designed to make it easier to lift kayaks, snowboards and other toys onto the roof rack. The rear bumper is also designed to aid roof access.  the no boundaries rack system features a sliding rail that can be repositioned from the roof to the rear of the vehicle, locking into the bumper. This provides two separate loading surfaces: a traditional roof rack and a vertically oriented rack across the rear. When not in use, the sliding rails can be stored within the conventional roof portion of the rack system. interiorthe escape has a spacious interior. Its front seats are nearly as roomy as the explorers. Getting in or out of the front seats is made easier by low door sills and wide door openings.  xls has manually adjustable seats trimmed with cloth. Xlt gets premium cloth trim.  white-faced instruments are set in a straightforward instrument panel. The audio system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the center stack are angled slightly toward the driver to ease reach while driving. Ford upgraded escape's interior for 2003 with improved interior materials. Power window and lock switches are illuminated to make them easier to find.  side-impact airbags are standard on limited, optional 345) on xls and xlt. Pretensioners combined with load-limiting retractors are standard on front-seat belts. In a crash, these pretensioners automatically tighten the belts, while the load limiters are designed to reduce the risk of chest injuries in severe collisions.  the rear seats offer good knee room. The rear seats are split 60/40. The rear-seat cushion can be removed for more load-carrying capacity. It handles better than a jeep liberty or toyota rav4, and is quicker than a honda cr-v. Steering is responsive. It feels direct and accurate with no dead spot in the center. There's enough feeling in the steering to impart a sense of control. Though this is not a sports car, the tires grip respectably in paved corners. There's surprisingly good transient response in a series of left-right-left corners. This permits quick, yet smooth, driving that will not upset passengers.  the v6 engine delivers good acceleration. While there's no such thing as too much power, it never feels lacking in the escape. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down, and chooses gears appropriately for the situation. The engine's broad power band never lugs or strains. This isn't the smoothest v6 on the market, nor is it the roughest. Abs comes into play just when expected and is detectable by the familiar pulsating sensation.  the escape felt comfortable on a muddy fire road pocked with puddles and potholes, but it is lacking in true off-road situations. Its front-drive platform leaves it spinning its wheels on rough, loose, steep trails. It lacks traction and suspension travel. The suspension does not have the articulation needed for rugged terrain and there is no low-range set of gears. For everyday road travel, however, the ford escape is an excellent choice.  when properly equipped, escape has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. summaryford escape is a well-balanced on-road suv. It has a roomy interior and good cargo capacity. The available v6 engine provides the escape with strong power. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with.
